Call it ranting, call it blasphemy, but I can't keep it in any longer!

As much as I love linking things to the past in anime, I'm really getting tired of the history repeating itself theme. I don't like the main characters fitting into the older/past characters shoes so that some great cycle can relive itself until one of those characters is able to say "Yeah, well I'm changing history now." It's so cliche! ARGH!!

In other news, I just started reading Dracula for the first time ever. I've barely gotten to the part where John Harker meets Dracula and I must say, John is the biggest uke-type ever. I'm not going to be able to read this book and NOT think yaoi.

Monday:

I found out someone I know found a match.

Tuesday:
[info]fartyfishy was called and told she was a match for someone.

Pat went to a conference on software, and the last talk on Tuesday was about happiness. The speaker has some experience and research in social media and cancer patients, re: bone marrow drives. She sent me a passel of information that I received on Thursday.

HCBU.bethematch.org launched.

Wednesday:

Survived it, thanks to friends and family. I ate lots of comfort food.

Thursday:

One of Emru's former students informed me that she signed up as a donor in his honour.

I received an amazing email from someone who is forming a registry linked into the larger US registries and he actually used one of my suggestions. This man is way smarter than me, so if he thinks I did something right, then I think I'm doing it right.

Mr. P came home! After what was probably the worst week of the year for him to leave, I was so relieved and happy to see his face. He had a great time, and although he didn't want to go because of the timing, it was well worth it. You would puke or think I was on drugs if I revealed just how much I actually love him, so I'll spare you. We talked more about the developments from Monday to Thursday.

Today:

This: Yes.

So awesome. Affirm the Charter here

Hey, another cry for school help.

I need to write a persuasive speech and I have nothing I'm interested/passionate about to try and persuade ppl over. (at least, nothing I can think of at the moment)

Long story short, does anyone know of any interesting persuasive topics? My prof mentioned the landing on the moon which I thought was pretty cool, but now that she's said it, it's sort of off limits XD

Notes augmented

We've enhanced and de-bugged Notes. If you haven't tried it yet, now's the time! You can create a private note when you ban multiple users. You can also delete multiple notes at once. Lastly, paid users have the option to add a note (visible only to you) whenever you add or remove a friend (guaranteed to avoid embarrassing social mishaps). If you don't currently have a paid account, you can upgrade now! It only takes a few minutes and costs less than a bad shopping mall haircut (plus, it's way more fashionable)!

Product tweaks and bug kill

  1. In another effort to zap spam, comments containing links from domains LiveJournal deems untrustworthy are now automatically screened
  2. If you sign up to get notifications of the Writer's Block question of the day, you'll now see the daily question in the email notification, so you'll have a little extra time to ponder before you post. You can subscribe to Writers Block notifications here
  3. The issue causing random comments to vanish has been fixed!
  4. If you visit a LiveJournal page and get prompted to log in, you'll be returned to the same page after you sign in (Thanks, Dreamwidth)!
  5. If you don't edit the timestamp for an entry at all, the entry timestamp will indicate the time the entry was posted instead of the time the Update Journal page was loaded
  6. Comments with paddings/backgrounds render correctly within the comment box (and will no longer wrap outside the box and break frames/margins)

New FCK fixes rich text editor!

  1. We've updated our RTE (Rich Text Editor) to FCKeditor version 2.6.5
  2. When switching from the RTE to HTML editor, links for syndicated feeds are no longer broken
  3. RTE now functions properly in Safari 4.0
  4. An extra line/space will not be auto-inserted whenever you switch from RTE to HTML editor
  5. The insert image link now works correctly in all browsers

LiveJournal Cares

We’re pleased to introduce you to [info]lj_cares, a new LiveJournal community dedicated to raising awareness and funds for U.S. charitable organizations that improve the health and well-being of people around the world. Each month, we’ll spotlight a nonprofit that is making a significant global impact through medical research, public outreach, and/or humanitarian social programs. Charities will be selected in accordance with the U.S. calendar of national health observances based on a high rating (of over 60%) on Charity Navigator and global scope of impact.

In this, our inaugural month of November, we will celebrate national adoption month by offering a charitable virtual gift (priced at $2.99) to support Love Without Boundaries, an organization that saves the lives of orphans with life-threatening diseases and places them in loving homes around the world. LiveJournal will donate 100% of the proceeds from the sale of charitable vgifts (we'll cover the cost of credit card transaction fees). To learn more about Love Without Boundaries, please visit [info]lj_cares and read about how they helped save Baby Kang and the Rainbow Twins from fatal illnesses, who are now thriving in nurturing families. You can purchase your Love Without Boundaries gifts in the Virtual Gift shop.

We're thrilled with our improved decor.

Please keep the love coming for one more week by writing to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. Be sure to include your username, since we'll be drawing the names of ten random contributors next Thursday to win paid account credits!

Curtains

We thank you, once again, for joining us. See you next week!

EDIT@08:16 UTC/GMT. Wow. That was ugly. I expected it to go for 30 minutes and have maybe 1 minute of broken connectivity. Instead it lasted over 4 hours and we had 10 minutes of downtime directly related to the load balancer upgrades and then another 5-10 minutes of downtime when our primary Pingback database server crashed and the secondary couldn't take over; which could have been indirectly caused by the network upgrade missing a self-VIP.

Anyways, we're up, we're working, the load balancers are barely breaking a sweat right now and I need some food and a shot of whiskey. I don't even *like* whiskey!!

Thanks [info]mhwest and [info]dnewhall for helping out!

---

On Saturday the 14th at 4AM UTC/GMT we will be upgrading the operating system of our network load balancers to a newer version, one that will allow us to use both CPUs! Nifty, because multiprocessing is nice.

Since we have 2 load balancers, the plan is to upgrade 1 at a time, and there really should be very little impact to our website. Hopefully you won't notice a thing and I'll get to go back to the hotel and watch some wonderful late night infomercials.

We've got a lot of exciting projects coming up for 2010 and we're hoping that we'll be able to deliver them all to you, that you will find it useful/cool/lovely and then you will use the site even more. Behind-the-scenes work like this will give us the capacity to handle the anticipated traffic, so expect a few more maintenance windows especially in the beginning of next year as we've got some neat ideas to improve performance around here! We had the recent 30-45 minute outage yesterday due to one of our logging databases filling up disk space -- not so great design coupled with my human error in handling the initial problem -- and it looks like we're going to finally have some resources to eliminate stuff like that. I can't wait!

As usual, I will be updating status.livejournal.org before and after, just in case you are not able to reach our main website during the work.
10th-Nov-2009 02:24 pm - Random Amusement to Make YOU Smile 8D
Over the weekend I was helping my mom make dinner (which is rare), when my dad walked in with a basketful of limes from one of the trees in the backyard. After my mom informed him the food would be ready in a few minutes, I turned around from the stove and proudly stated, "The women have cooked!"

My dad then proceeded to stare at me for a moment before smirking and setting the basket on the table with the declaration of, "And the man has foraged!"

As we shared a laugh, my mom (who is not from this country XD) threw her hands up and complained, "What the heck? Are we cavemen now??"

---

On Saturday I was called in as an emergency babysitter for two kids I met all of once at a birthday party a few years ago. The boy seems to have restless wandering syndrome when tired and somehow fell asleep under the coffee table.

I left him there.

---

I was taking two little girls to the Springs Preserve here in Vegas and told them we were getting on the freeway so they needed to stay calm and not fight. The 5 year old asked what a freeway was and after explaining it to her, both children fell into silence as asked.

Several minutes later, the 5 year old spoke up. "Freeway? This should be called the speedway!" D8

---

A three year old I watch has a wart on her elbow. How or why it got there is a mystery, but it's there and she decided to show me this anomaly. After gawking at it for the appropriate amount of time (two seconds) I leaned back and asked her what she thought it was.

With a shrug, she told me it was probably a marble.

I laughed at her so hard, she changed her mind and said it wasn't a marble.

---

After a dry spell of not sitting on babies for nearly a month, I was finally called in, only for the mother to realize I wasn't really needed. She decided to have me stay anyways, saying the girls really missed me.

I looked over at the two little darlings and kindly responded, "You're not allowed to tell me that when they're huddled in a corner watching TV on a cell phone."

I mostly don't post on LJ anymore, because I don't have very much time. My mind is also often on automatic pilot. See my previous posts for why I also spend less time on LJ.

Another reason is I have never been articulate in a way that satisfies me when I journal. It is an effort. It is like pulling teeth, and it never comes out the way I want it to.

Right now my mind has been a jumble.

I am SO MUCH BETTER than where I was a year ago, but I would lie to say, "I am healed."

I am actually very happy. But the pain surprises me at times.

I lost my brother, but I also lost my best friend.

I also lost someone who owned more stuff than I do, and I am still trying to figure out what to do with a good portion of it!

I also had projects I was in the middle of working on, projects that are now a moot point, projects that I want to start, and a completely different set of goals. Oh wait, that's Life.

I still have problems reading, and my level of distraction is higher. My attention span has become that of a gnat.

I've spent a lot of time thinking about what to do with fps, and I think it might be time to call it quits, but work on it enough first so it is in a state where I feel comfortable walking away while I do other things. I am still not sure.

I remind myself of the things I am doing right, and Mr. Perfect does the same for me constantly. I am so grateful we found each other, and even more amazed of how steadfast he is during this time.

As almost a year has passed, there are things that I am still not good at doing. I have to admit that I am not organized anymore and just move on. I classify myself as a reader more for nostalgic reasons that for any books read this year. Just deal with it. I've had less problems acknowledging that I could care less if I am the first person to see such and such movie or read such and such book or comic, and I have always been like that, it's just more apparent since I am now "behind" (others' words not mine) and people notice.

Mr P has lost a lot of weight, and I've only lost a little, but we're going to do the home stretch together. We're a good team. No pressure.

I've been sick for the past few days, so now that I finally have a weekend to myself, I actually have little energy to do anything, even read a book. But I'll try.

I don't really know why I am writing this. It's almost a year since my bro died, and I was really fearing this week, but as it got closer, I was more and more OK with it, and showed me I was improving, but since November hit, it's been one flashback after another.

Babysat for a different family tonight...What is with parents coming home in the MIDDLE of Avatar episodes??!? At this rate I'm going to end up being only HALF familiar with EVERY episode in the series!!

5th-Nov-2009 02:40 pm - Yes, it's that time of week again...
Fangirl-time!!!

Last night, I had to babysit. And after the little darling went to bed, I sat down and watched about 3 hours worth of TiVo'd Avatar episodes. They were in no particular order, which I was okay with. I saw something from the very beginning, some stuff from the middle, learned about Zuko's past (which made my heart go doki doki), and then was suddenly thrust into the climax of the very end of the series - when the big battles begin. Naturally (lol, I typed 'Narutolly' XD), it was in the middle of THIS episode that the parents decided to come home. I was so into what I was watching that I went a little nuts (only in my head) and did a LOT of mental keyboard smashing as I was forced to turn the tv off and head home.

I've never really followed Avatar before and now want to watch the whole series, beginning to end ._.

Moving on!

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.
